Last day in Dubai: see dubai, 2004 for a few photos from the trip.

We hit the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa for breakfast this morning, but we passed on the chance to hit a few balls on the driving range: 38°C at 80% humidity (estimated) tends to have that effect on all but a few (fool)hardy souls. Mad Dogs and Englishmen? More Germans than English were in evidence on the beach and in the pools.

Summary: a pleasant holiday with no thoughts of work beyond the occasional therapeutic moan about managers and processes, with reference to Dilbert etc. I’m sure I’ll be exrtacting and discussing more details and opinions on Dubai later, since my stay has given me a lot to think about. Not forgetting the simple pleasure of seeing my friends again, and meeting the next generation.

The last couple of days have been spent mostly indoors, playing with the kids and with PCs. Network troubleshooting, operating system reinstallations, and games, mostly Civilization III (Civ3). Tonight, however, we got out to the Bateux Dubai, an evening dinner cruise along Dubai Creek, past the neon skyscrapers, while dhows and abras (river taxis) sped past us. Excellent food too, and while there was “live music”, it was quite laid-back and not intrusive. (If music is supposed to enhance our experience of life, why is it often forced on us in totally inappropriate situations?)
